Akhnoor is the historic town situated on the banks of the Chenab river about 32 kms. short of Jammu. The town is famously associated with the folk romance of Sohni and Mahiwal. And it was here at the Jeopotha Temple on the banks of the Chenab that Maharaja Gulab Singh was coronated in 1822 as the First King of Dogra dynasty of Jammu and Kashmir by Maharaja Ranjeet Singh of Punjab.
